Oh sure, I'm the conspiracy theorist, and all the references to Orwell are dumb.
Check it out. Billmon: Down the Memory Hole.
Well, is it Iran or North Korea? I'm guessing Nevada. It looks familiar. Who releases satellite images of sensitive intelligence? I'm guessing the Pentagon with White House approval. That would be familiar.
From a speech on October 2nd, 2002, appropriately titled Denial and Deception, President Bush said.
Satellite photographs reveal that Iraq is rebuilding facilities at sites that have been part of its nuclear program in the past. Iraq has attempted to purchase high-strength aluminum tubes and other equipment needed for gas centrifuges, which are used to enrich uranium for nuclear weapons.
In a related story that won't be published in this hemisphere:
An Australian scientist involved in the US search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq said the CIA censored his reporting so that it suggested the weapons existed, according to an interview on Monday...
He added, “Charles’ (Duelfer) attitude was he did not want to inspect them or know. Then he could genuinely say to Washington that he doesn’t know what they are for.”

The story lost a little zest when they found the right picture, no?

Did they? I just picked it up at Billmon and went with it. If it's a bogus trail, then I'll take it down.

Yeah, the last update is that they published a third picture that was Iran, or the one they used was Iran--anyway, they supplied a different picture. It doesn't solve how or why they used two different aspects of the same picture for both articles at first, but there's an explanation now, at least.

I'll agree it's probably an honest mistake and not so Orwellian, but since I found the Aussie Dr. to add to the post, I'm going leave this up unless, TJ, you think too much journalistic error is bad for appearances?Billmon, who is my linkage source, has the third picture up, and spicey 1984 words.

I think Billmon jumped the gun a bit, but he did the right thing and updated his story as necessary. You, my right-blogging friend, are fine.
